If you hold Mars Hotel upside down and look at it in a mirror, the banner under the title says "Ugly Rumors"...

And of course our very own Prime Monster Tony Blair played guitar and sang in a band called Ugly Rumours while he was at university. They only played four gigs.

Ironically, after I graduated college in 1973, I hitched to S.F. Being near broke, I went and found a cheap, nasty transient hotel. I chose it for its name--Mars Hotel.

Whew. Nasty, nasty, nasty. Better to get busted and spend the night in jail!

You got that right, G&K. The cover art (Closing of...) is straight off the original poster. Stanley & Mouse strike again...

Peace.

The early covers were rather interesting when shown under day glo lights. Supposedly, each face is a band member. Want to guess who is who? Beats me.

Can we agree that Go to Heaven with its look of incorporeal corporate smugness is the hands-down worst cover?

Yeah, that's another winner by a wide margin. Makes the Built To Last cover look like the front of Sgt. pepper's by comparison.

I disagree about Go to Heaven. Yeah, they're in creepy suits, but In the Dark is just creepy eyebrows. They either look like satanists or middle-aged ninjas. It's way too personal for me, at any rate.

Though it lacks the intensity of Mars or some of the others, I gotta vote for Skullfuck--for pure iconic value alone you can't beat the Rubiyyat woodcut. Just seems that, above all others, it's the artwork that even non-heads recognize/identify with the Dead.

Bingo. Rick Griffin was the nexus of the S.F. poster scene.
All that fertility stuff combined with the skulls--perfect rendition of the seemingly contradictory band.

Griffin was a god.

To this day whenever I see Aoxomoxoa's coverart I'm remembering an old girlfriend squealing "the skull looks like a penis!"

...it took almost an hour & a couple bowl-packs before it occurred to her the sun was embryonic. Brilliant stuff...

Skull's most definitely a penis, though it was Melissa's nails-on-a-chalkboard squeal about it that seared that moment into my psyche...

A couple years ago I came across a catalog (ArtRock?)of a Griffin retrospective. Frigging amazing stuff. I especially dug how many ended up being titled "Unnameable," ha! Say what we want about "acid-enlightment' (don't buy it myself) but acid-feuled inspiration is undeniable. Rick was a freaking master.

Get it right Pig Ghost:

Tweedle-De-Dum and Tweedle-De-Dee

Bob Dylan

Tweedle-dee Dum and Tweedle-dee Dee
They're throwing knives into the tree
Two big bags of dead man's bones
Got their noses to the grindstones

Living in the Land of Nod
Trustin' their fate to the Hands of God
They pass by so silently
Tweedle-dee Dum and Tweedle-dee Dee

Well, they're going to the country, they're gonna retire
They're taking a streetcar named Desire
Looking in the window at the pecan pie
Lot of things they'd like they would never buy

Neither one gonna turn and run
They're making a voyage to the sun
"His Master's voice is calling me,"
Says Tweedle-dee Dum to Tweedle-dee Dee

Tweedle-dee Dee and Tweedle-dee Dum
All that and more and then some
They walk among the stately trees
They know the secrets of the breeze

Tweedle-dee Dum said to Tweedle-dee Dee
"Your presence is obnoxious to me."
They're like babies sittin' on a woman's knee
Tweedle-dee Dum and Tweedle-dee Dee

Well, the rain beating down on my windowpane
I got love for you and it's all in vain
Brains in the pot, they're beginning to boil
They're dripping with garlic and olive oil

Tweedle-dee Dee - he's on his hands and his knees
Saying, "Throw me somethin', Mister, please."
"What's good for you is good for me,"
Says Tweedle-dee Dum to Tweedle-dee Dee

Well, they're living in a happy harmony
Tweedle-dee Dum and Tweedle-dee Dee
They're one day older and a dollar short
They've got a parade permit and a police escort

They're lying low and they're makin' hay
They seem determined to go all the way
They run a brick and tile company
Tweedle-dee Dum and Tweedle-dee Dee

Well a childish dream is a deathless need
And a noble truth is a sacred creed
My pretty baby, she's lookin' around
She's wearin' a multi-thousand dollar gown

Tweedle-dee Dee is a lowdown, sorry old man
Tweedle-dee Dum, he'll stab you where you stand
"I've had too much of your company,"
Says, Tweedle-dee Dum to Tweedle-dee Dee

Life is not yet 'return to normal' if that is ever to be expected, but I am finding a few moments now and again to indulge myself here...do still miss the likes of Ashes & Arbuthnot, to name a few, but that's the way of things evolving...right?

Hope all is well across the pond. Was thinking of you the other day on the 'best yr' thread--you are a 74 or so man, right? I am just curious--what did you think of the 'official' 74 live material (Steal your Face, I think)? At the time it came out, we were deeply disappointed, but I wonder if folks that focus on the 70s appreciate it more now...If I recall, we didn't like the mix and song selection, but may have been very biased.

I guess 'normal' is just what you get used to. When the pieces of your life are thrown up in the air the pattern is never the way it was before.

My vote was for 72 - the birth of psychedelic Americana, when they really began to move forward into a whole new epoch of music making - the transition from the unbridled energy of youth to the focus of early maturity. The best time.

In order to answer your Steal Your Face question I'll have to hunt through the garage and find the album - it's been a good few years since I listened to that one. I'll get back to you on that.

Cool. So, what do you think of Europe 72? Do you think it captures the essence of your beloved year or do you prefer other sources for that year? I have not really done much with that year other than browse a few shows mentioned by the doctors and others here abouts...
